Making your own homemade baby food is a fun and easy way to make sure your little one is eating a healthy diet. By making it yourself, you know exactly what ingredients are in it. No preservatives or any other additives.
Plus making your own baby food is so much cheaper than buying it. A 4 oz jar or pouch of baby food often costs around $1-2 a piece. The ingredients I used cost around $6-7 and made about 90 oz of baby food. That’s about 8 cents or less an ounce for homemade and 25-50 cents an ounce for store bought.
Homemade baby food is also less wasteful. You won’t be throwing out a million little jars or pouches into the trash.
The recipes here are all stage 1 baby foods for babies 4-6 months old. Simple, basic, one ingredient purees. Spend a few hours whipping up these healthy and tasty foods for your little one!
It doesn’t take much to make your own baby food. Just some basic kitchen equipment. You probably already have most, if not all, of these items it your kitchen already. If not, improvise!
- Cutting board and knife
- Pot – to boil and steam fruits and veggies (I used a few to make everything go faster)
- Steamer basket – not a necessity, but it does make it easier to steam carrots and other veggies
- Baking sheet – to cook potatoes and squash
- Food processor/blender/immersion blender – to puree fruits and veggies – use what you have.
- Ice cube trays – to freeze baby food into pre-portioned servings
- Zip-lock bags – or other containers to store your frozen baby food cubes
Here are the 5 food I decided to start with:
- sweet potato
- butternut squash
- 4 apples
- frozen peas (half a bag)
- carrots (about 5-6 whole carrots)
These are some of the most common, excellent first foods for a baby just starting out with solid foods. All super cheap and available at any grocery store.
Homemade Baby Food Directions
Baby food is so easy to make yourself! You just cook the foods until soft, blend, and freeze. That simple!
If you want to make some other flavors, the easy directions below can be translated to whatever fruits or veggies you decide to use. Peaches, pears, green beans, and pumpkin are some other great choices to start with.
Prep and cook fruits and veggies
Preheat your oven to 400′. Cut butternut squash in half lengthwise and scrape out seeds with a spoon. Pierce sweet potato all around with a fork. Place potatoes and squash on a baking sheet (squash flat side down) and cook about 45 minutes.
While the sweet potato and squash are cooking, wash, peel, and chop carrots and apples into medium chunks. Now to get them cooked.
First, get the carrots into a steamer basket over a pot of boiling water. Steam for about 20 minutes, until the carrots are tender.
Next, put apples into a pot of boiling water. Boil 15 minutes until tender.
Finally, pour half a bag of frozen peas into boiling water and boil 5 minutes.
I like to get them all going at once to save time, starting with whatever takes the longest. It does, however, create a lot more dishes…
So you could cook things one at a time to save yourself from a mountain of dishes at the end.
Puree cooked fruit and veggies
The peas will be done first; drain and pour into the food processor, add a little water and blend until smooth. Do the same with the apples, then the carrots. The amount of water will vary. Add enough until baby food is the consistency you like.
Once the sweet potato and butternut squash are cooked, peel the skin off of the sweet potato. It should come right off. Put it in the food processor with some water and blend.
Again, do the same with the butternut squash. Scoop the cooked squash out of it’s shell, add to the food processor with some water, and blend.
Freeze your homemade baby food
After blending each food, spoon into ice cube trays and freeze. Ice cube trays are the perfect size for portioning out your homemade baby food. Each cube is about 1 ounce, making it so simple to measure at meal time.
If you don’t have enough ice cube trays to freeze all of it at once, do it in batches. Store any extra in the fridge until the first round of homemade baby food is frozen. Pop the cubes out and place into labeled and dated bags.

Feed your baby
At night, I pull a few cubes out of the freezer and place into small glass mason jars in the fridge to thaw for the next day. I like to use plastic lids like this. They’re simpler than the 2-piece metal lids the jars come with, plus you don’t have to worry about the lids getting rusty.
The food is good for 48 hours in the fridge. When you’re ready to feed your little one, you can just pull it out of the fridge and warm it up a little if you wish.
My homemade baby food ended up being a little thicker than I’d like. If this happens to you too, don’t worry. Just stir in a little more water before you freeze or when you’re ready to serve.
Depending on how much your baby eats at once, you will probably use a few cubes at a time. Once you know your baby can tolerate particular foods, you can start mixing them together to make some tasty blends. You could even stir one into some oatmeal baby cereal.
