Why make it homemade?

Check out the ingredients on the spice mix packets from the grocery store. They have ingredients like: corn or potato starch, maltodextrin, potassium magnesium chloride, silicon dioxide, and sugar.

None of those nasty ingredients in this recipe! It’s free from artificial ingredients & preservatives, low-sugar, and gluten free.

Not only is homemade healthier, but it’s also cheaper. A packet of onion soup mix costs over $1 at the grocery store. You can make it homemade for a few cents with ingredients you probably already have most of in your pantry.

Plus it’s less wasteful to make your spice mixes homemade. No single-use packets or containers to toss in the trash.

There are so many ways to use onion soup mix! Any recipe using a packet of Lipton Onion Soup Mix, just use 1/4 cup of this mix.

One of my favorite ways that I use homemade Onion Soup Mix all the time is a slow cooker pot roast. This is a classic that I’ve loved eating since I was a kid. It’s so easy and only takes a few ingredients:

  • Put a 3-4 lb chuck roast (but any roast you have will work fine) into the slow cooker
  • Sprinkle with 1/4 cup onion soup mix
  • Then surround with carrots and potatoes
  • Pour in enough water to go half way up the roast

French Onion Dip is another way I love using this homemade onion soup mix. It’s perfect for dipping chips or veggies. It’s so simple, plus it’s cheaper than store-bought dip. And healthier than most too. It’s so easy to make with only 3 ingredients:

  • Combine 2 tbsp onion soup mix with 1 cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream and 1/2 tsp sugar (optional, but it really improves the flavor!)
  • Cover and store in the fridge

Those are the two most common ways I use homemade onion soup mix, but there are a ton of other great ways to use it:

  • I love a good cheese ball for an easy appetizer at holiday parties
